Water & Wastewater

Our Experts

When it comes to water and wastewater, we’ve got you covered. From designing the latest treatment technologies to creative approaches to unique challenges, River to Tap (R2T) can assist you with meeting your program goals.

R2T’s Water and Wastewater Engineering Team is made up of personnel with experience in the areas of engineering design, owner representation and consulting, project management, and treatment plant operations. Our qualified staff of engineers and scientists provide high levels of service by designing and developing safe drinking water and wastewater alternatives using advanced treatment technologies. We work with utilities, local governments, and municipalities to facilitate the development of innovative and cost-effective solutions to water supply and wastewater treatment needs.

Kensington Pump Station

R2T designed Kensington Pump Station for DeKalb County DWM to replace a failing gravity sewer main and address several logistical issues. The preexisting sewer main was routed underneath a 30ft retaining wall which made repairs prohibitively costly. Kensington Pump Station allowed the relocation of the sewer main along an accessible alignment and provided capacity for future development in the area. R2T evaluated multiple site options and pump station configurations that balanced cost, accessibility, and constructability. For this program, R2T was responsible for planning and preliminary engineering, detailed design, permitting, and easements, as well as limited construction phase services.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Master Plan and Hydraulic Modeling Support

R2T assisted the City of Atlanta DWM with the development and implementation of a sewer system hydraulic model and subsequent condition assessment with wastewater monitoring and master planning services for critical infrastructure at Hartsfield-Jackson. We conducted a vulnerability assessment and managed internal inspection of a key pipeline and wastewater characterization through a sampling plan to identify waste load quality issues. R2T assisted the DWM’s Flow Monitoring Division in the implementation of a sewer metering program in a challenging, limited-access environment, and in ensuing data quality reviews. R2T’s expertise was key in managing the development of a hydraulic sanitary sewer model in InfoWorks ICM.

Water Reuse Feasibility Study

R2T assisted DeKalb County in solving water reuse and inter-basin transfer challenges between the Chattahoochee River Basin and the Ocmulgee River Basin. We identified emerging contaminants and health risks through an extensive literature review, related treatment requirements and advanced treatment technologies, met with regulators to review permitting for various forms of reuse, and developed preliminary non-potable and indirect reuse concepts. R2T produced a reuse study replete with cost estimates and alternatives analysis.

Bolton and Phillip Lee Pump Stations

R2T provided full-service, multi-discipline engineering design services to the City of Atlanta DWM for the replacement of the Bolton Road and Phillip Lee Pump Stations. R2T provided architectural, structural, process mechanical, civil, electrical, and instrumentation design services for two discreet design-bid-build packages, one for each station. As the lead firm, R2T also implemented hydraulic similitude modeling in conjunction with the Clemson Hydraulics Laboratory. Results of the models were used to optimize footprint and recognize cost savings while allowing adequate capacity to meet future flow projections.

City of Atlanta Water Master Plan

As part of the 5-year requirements set forth by the Metro North Georgia Water Planning District, the City of Atlanta Department of Watershed Management (DWM) engaged R2T to provide a new Water Master Plan (WMP), which considered all components of its water supply system. R2T managed and executed all phases of the WMP development. We conducted numerous workshops with DWM staff to establish existing conditions for the raw water system, treatment facilities, and distribution network, including the soon-to-be-operational Quarry Water Storage Facility and its associated tunnel and pump stations.

James E. Quarles Water Treatment Plant Raw Water Intake Improvements

R2T provided design and construction management services for two phases of improvements to the raw water intake and pump station at the James E. Quarles Plant consisting of the removal/replacement of two existing oil water separators and the removal/replacement of five traveling screens at both pump station intakes. Replacements were needed to improve reliability and reduce maintenance requirements. R2T was responsible for the conceptual design, progressive detailed design, permitting services, bidding assistance, construction administration, and construction management.

W.J. Hooper Water Production Plant Residuals Handling Improvements

R2T provided Engineering and Construction Management Services to the Clayton County Water Authority for the design and construction of the W.J. Hooper Water Production Plant (WPP) Residuals Handling Improvements, Phase I project. The project consisted of a detailed assessment, preliminary engineering, and detailed design of the overall residuals system to include a new thickener, sludge pumping system, overhaul of the existing filter backwash clarification system, rehabilitation of existing thickeners, and improvements to the solids disposal and loading systems. R2T provided overall construction management and served as the Owner’s representative through the bidding and construction phase of the project.

Dalecarlia Washington Aqueduct

The Washington Aqueduct (WA), a division of the Baltimore District USACE, treats water drawn from the Potomac River to produce drinking water for Washington, DC, and portions of Northern Virginia. Under an IDIQ contract, R2T is providing environmental, mechanical, structural, and electrical upgrades to the infrastructure related to the Dalecarlia backwash and clearwell systems. R2T has been tasked with field investigations, evaluations, detailed design development (contract documents), 3D modeling, asset registry, permitting, and services during construction to successfully implement the various improvements.

East Park Reservoir Design & Engineering Services

R2T provided design and engineering services for process yard piping associated with the Philadelphia Water Department’s East Park Reservoir, a state-of-the-art 60-million-gallon storage facility designed for the hydraulic grade line of the upstream transmission system and the downstream service zone. Two 30 MG circular, pre-stressed concrete water storage tanks, supporting infrastructure, control structures, and monitoring structures were provided.
